6 million jobs and all I want is one.

About 30 minutes ago Barack Obama gave the biggest speech of his yet to begin presidency.  He urged Congress to approve his financial rescue plan and insured the American people that while it may take time our economy will improve. Obama said that his plan will create 6 million jobs in both the public and private sectors. Thousands of college students and I graduated this December with degrees in communications. I assume we are all asking the same thing.

“President-Elect Obama how long will it take before employers are ready to take chances and hire new talent, give them a secure job and pay them a good salary?”
On Monday I start an internship at an exciting public relations firm in Downtown Boston. While I am extremely happy with my internship and believe that in one form or another in will lead to a great job, I am worried about how long it will take. I leave Indiana on Saturday en route to Boston and I will be moving into one of the most expensive cities in the country. My internship is unpaid and I will most likely have to work in the service or retail industry making low wages to scrap by while I wait for that great job.
I do not feel entitled to a great paying job nor do expect employers to be begging me to work for them. I do however expect that if Obama’s plan is going to generate 6 million jobs that he thinks about Millennials and recent grads who are very responsible for getting him into the White House.  I have talked to older generations who believe Millennials have an attitude of entitlement and don’t have strong work ethic. I hope that this stereotype is debunked soon because we are full of young people who know the value of hard work and alive with the entrepreneurial spirit.
I have a strong belief that Obama will bring our country’s economy back to prominence and I am glad that I am able to start my goal of moving to Boston and begin a career. I hope that his economic plan will bring confidence and comfort to all the youth in a similar position as mine. From what I have seen right now we are not comfortable and have a hard time waiting.
